  • Astrobiology Roadmap This document, prepared during 1998 and 1999 at NASA Ames Research Center, was developed by astrobiology community to help establish the framework for astrobiology research in the next century. This document contains a series of questions, objectives, and strategies for this evolving discipline.

  • Pale Blue Dot II Workshop (1999) This May 1999 workshop at NASA Ames Research Center addressed the detection and study of habitable and inhabited worlds beyond our own solar system.

  • Genomics on the International Space Station This 1999 workshop at NASA Ames Research Center focused on basic space biology research on board the ISS with a particular emphasis on genomics studies - the effects of microgravity on gene expression and the use of microgravity as a tool to understand gene function.

  • NASA Astrobiology Institute First General Meeting This meeting, held at NASA Ames Research Center in 1998, served as both an introduction to the new discipline of Astrobiology for people forma wide range of disciplines as well as a means of helping to define the research plan for NASA's Astrobiology program.

  • Astrobiology Roadmap Workshop This workshop was held in 1998 at NASA Ames Research Center with the of goal developing a research and development plan for the nascent field of Astrobiology for the 2000-2020 time frame, with focus on the first ten years.

  • Mars Deep Water Sounding Workshop This workshop was held at NASA Ames Research Center in January 1998. The focus of the workshop was to review the possible approaches for searching for deep subsurface water on Mars and recommend a strategy for performing the search.

  • Mars Deep Drilling Workshop The purpose of this 1998 workshop was to review models of Martian crustal water and environment, re assess rationale for acquisition of samples from Martian hydrosphere, examine the habitability potential of environment below cryosphere and develop the requirements for sample acquisition and environmental measurements

  • Evolution and Development Workshop (1998) The purpose of this 1998 workshop held at NASA Ames Research Center was to provide recommendations for a new external research program which employs developmental molecular biology to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms and pathways by which the evolution of multicellular forms has occurred on Earth.

  • Piggyback Missions for Astrobiology Workshop The purpose of this 1998 workshop held at NASA Ames Research Center was to identify opportunities for near-term astrobiology payloads on missions being developed by NASA's Space, Earth, and Human Exploration and Development of Space Enterprises in addition to external and commercial missions.

  • Advanced Measurement Systems Workshop (1998) The goal of this 1998 workshop held at NASA Ames Research Center was to characterize the current and near-term projected state of measurement system technologies needed for Astrobiology research on terrestrial and space missions.

  • Evolution and Ecology Beyond the Planet of Origin The goal of this workshop held at NASA Ames Research Center in 1998 was to review the state of knowledge, to determine science goals and objectives for future research, and to characterize mission opportunities and technology readiness and requirements needed to characterize the potential for evolution of life beyond its planet of origin.

  • Life: from Local Origins to Global Persistence Workshop (1998) This 1998 workshop held at the University of New Hampshire discussed the origin of life, the genetic code, and the evolution of life from its simple beginning to eventually inhabit every possible environmental niche of this planet.

  • Arctic and Antarctic Access Undersea Workshop Report (1998) This workshop was held in April 1998 by NOAA's West Coast and Polar Regions Undersea Research Center, NASA, and the US Coast Guard to examine requirements and capabilities for the conduct of science in some of the most extreme environments on Earth (polar regions, deep sea) and to explore areas of commonality with the technologies that NASA has developed to explore Mars and other bodies in the solar system.

  • Exozodiacal Dust Workshop This 1997 conference at NASA Ames Research Center concerned the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF), a spatial interferometer working at infrared wavelengths to detect and characterize hypothetical Earth-like planets, and a discussion of instruments, missions, and theoretical models which might produce an improved understanding of exo-zodiacal dust.

  • Pale Blue Dot: Detecting Other Habitable Worlds This 1996 workshop sponsored by NASA Ames Research Center explored the key questions and challenges associated with detecting life on an extrasolar planet. The workshop included sessions on three related topics: the biogeochemistry of biogenic gases in the atmosphere, the chemistry and spectroscopy of planetary atmospheres, and the remote sensing of planetary atmospheres and surfaces.

  • First Astrobiology Workshop (1996) The purpose of this 1996 workshop at NASA Ames Research Center was to identify opportunities for multidisciplinary studies in the new field of astrobiology, and to provide a forum for exchange of information and networking among space, life, and Earth scientists.
